After multiple attempts, Bevil Oaks has detached from Beaumont ISD and will join Hardin-Jefferson ISD in the 2018-2019 school year.
The merger is effective as of July 1, 2018, according to a Beaumont ISD spokesperson.
The decision means students living in Bevil Oaks will become residents of H-JISD.
Title to property owned by BISD within Bevil Oaks will transfer to H-JISD, and the district will assume any BISD bond debt allocated to it by Jefferson County Commissioners.
H-JISD will assume jurisdiction of the annexed territory for all other purposes, according to a Beaumont ISD spokesperson.
H-JISD's Board of Trustees approved a petition filed by Bevil Oaks residents to join the district last year. Beaumont ISD's Board of Managers rejected the petition.
The decision was appealed and overturned by the TEA.
According to 12News file reports, Bevil Oaks residents filed a petition claiming that travel time to HJISD schools is shorter than to BISD schools.
The petition also claimed that HJISD schools perform better academically.
