Beaumont wants residents' input on how to make city parks better

They will be asking residents what their priorities are for new park equipment like more swings, sandpits, or added hands-on equipment.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Beaumont city leaders want your input as they move ahead with their 2024 parks master plan to make city parks a better place to play and hang out.

Later this month, the city council will vote to approve the company that will put the park plan together.

They will be asking residents what their priorities are for new park equipment like more swings, sandpits, or added hands-on equipment.

3-year-old TJ Parker loves to swing and play in the sand with lost of trucks. He's hoping for more sandpits in Beaumont parks. Parker isn't the only kid who wants to see more swings.

5-year-old Isabelle Vickers is visiting Beaumont and she's hoping for a spider net to climb on.

"I want a net, that is like a circle, that we can swing on," Vickers told 12News.

The City of Beaumont may make these kid's playground dreams come true.

The city's Parks and Green Space Department has $6.4 million this fiscal year to spend.

"Well the inspiration comes really from what the public really wants here in Beaumont," said The Assistant City Manager of Operations June Ellis.

Ellis says this is the time to speak up to help beautify Beaumont.

"We will really engage citizens of Beaumont and survey them, and have focus groups so that they can tell us what they would like to see. And they'll tell us, they'll tell the contractor or vendor that will be helping us plan together," said Ellis.

The call for input to create the master parks plan is not far away and parents and caregivers are excited.

"My son likes play with water, and bubbles, and sand," said parent Adriana Cotrina.

One dad, Alam Khan wants more kid friendly events at the parks.

"Similar to how parents rent out like bounce castles and things like that. Maybe have a little bit more events geared towards kids. So they can have a reason to come out here," Khan said.

Herlinda Loeffler is a great-grandma. She wants more educational activities for kids.

"Some little animal structures would be nice. Because we can teach them. What each this is. Where it comes from, you know things like that," she said.

Updated parks can help keep and attract new families to Beaumont, according to the city.

At the next city council meeting on February 20, leaders are expected to vote to approve the company that will create the master plan.
