BEAUMONT, Texas — Beaumont Police are investigating after a body was found inside of a vacant home Tuesday evening.
Police were sent to the home in the 1800 block of Broadway St. after a caller reported finding the body of a man inside according to a news release from Beaumont Police.
When officers arrived they found the front door open and the body of Eric Lydell Holman, 44, of Beaumont, just inside the home.
The preliminary autopsy reveals no evidence of assault or trauma to Holman, according to BPD.
There were no obvious signs of trauma to Holman, but due to "suspicious circumstances" detectives were sent to the scene to investigate, according to the release.
Holman's cause of death is still pending toxicology results, but it may have been an overdose, according to police.
Police say the apartment where Holman was found is known for narcotic and prostitution activity. Several squatters were in the process of being evicted, but were not present when police arrived.
Police often begin a death investigation as a homicide until the investigation or an autopsy confirms otherwise. A homicide is not always a murder and is defined as a death caused by another person which can include deaths that may later be ruled as manslaughter or an alternate defense such as self-defense.
Holman's immediate family was notified of his death at scene.
