Beaumont mayor responds to high water bills, offers solutions to residents

The mayor suggests to check for leaks or to have the city come out to conduct a flow-meter test.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Beaumont residents are receiving higher-than-usual water bills and are looking for answers to this overflowing issue.

The Beaumont Mayor, Roy West, said the drought forced many to use more water this summer which caused a spike in the water bills.

However, Beaumont resident, Timothy Rawlins, said "his water usage hasn't increased at all."

West suggests if you have an unusually high water bill  to check for water leaks.

"Just turn off all the water in your house and check your meters. It's one of the easiest things you can do," he said.

Beaumont resident, Freddy Strange, says he discovered his meter was actually the issue.

"They said I used 10 thousand gallons of water in one month and I found that pretty unusual. My home was being renovated and I wasn't living there at the time."

If you still can't find the cause to your mysteriously high water bill, Mayor West says the city can do a flow-meter test.

"When they run it through, they have your meter and theirs and they're testing to make sure they're the same," he said.

Rawlin's bill has gone up $25 and he plans to get his meter tested.

"I want to try and understand why the bills are increasing they way they are," he said.

West said he "understands frustrations can run high but we as the city certainly want to meet the needs of all our residents and we'll continue to strive to do that."

Mayor West says the City's water department can tell you what days you used the most water.

And if you want to get the flow-meter test, it could take about 5 days to get someone out to your home.
