Body of Beaumont man found in Neches River near Evadale Saturday morning following Wednesday morning wreck

He is believed to have been driving a pickup that was involved in a wreck early Wednesday morning along U.S. Highway 96 at the Neches River.

EVADALE, Texas — The body of a 73-year-old Beaumont man was found in the Neches River near Evadale Saturday morning. 

Homer Crawford, 73, of Beaumont, is believed to have been driving a 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 that was involved in a wreck early Wednesday morning along U.S. Highway 96 at the Neches River near Evadale according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Crawford's body was found in the river Saturday morning, May 11, 2024, according to a DPS news release.

At about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, May 8, 2024, the Dodge pickup was headed north on U.S. Highway 96 when it left the road, struck the guardrail and rolled multiple times according to the DPS.

A 49-year-old Buna woman was ejected from the truck and at first she was believed to have been the driver of the truck DPS said.

Later on Wednesday a search began for a possible second victim in the wreck.

The Jasper County Sheriff's Office sent the Jasper County Emergency Corps out to search the river near the scene of the wreck later on Wednesday morning public information officer, Deputy Karli Cherry told the East Texas Banner on Wednesday.

"We sent the Emergency Corps based on a call we received however we have no information confirming that there are any additional occupants," Cherry said at the time.

Members of the Emergency Corps along with the Evadale Volunteer Fire Department, 409 Search and Rescue and Texas Game Wardens have been helping with the search since then.

Crawford was pronounced dead at the scene Saturday morning  by a Jasper County justice of the peace.

Troopers said Saturday morning that evidence shows that Crawford was driving the truck at the time of the wreck.

The 49-year-old Kirbyville woman was taken by ambulance early Wednesday morning to Christus St Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont with life-threatening injuires according to the DPS.

Troopers are continuing to investigate the wreck.
