BEAUMONT, Texas — A man who used a golf club to rob a person of $12 and shoved a child to the ground before taking her debit card was sentenced to two years in prison.
John A. McMillian, 37, of Beaumont, pleaded guilty to second-degree felony robbery and theft from a person. A drug possession charge was dropped under a plea agreement.
In Beaumont, McMillian used a golf club to rob a man of $12, according to a probable cause affidavit.
According to court testimony, McMillian shoved a child to the ground and took her debit card but was arrested before he used it.
Judge Stevens sentenced him to two years in prison for robbery and a year and a half in prison for theft. However, McMillian, who has been in jail since the 2022 robbery, is expected to be released after processing, as he received credit for time served.
If he had been found guilty of robbery by a jury, he would have faced two to 20 years behind bars.
On Sept. 19, 2022, Beaumont police were called to the 2900 block of Washington Blvd.
When police arrived, they found McMillian, then 35, holding a broken golf club, according to the probable cause affidavit. He matched the description of the suspect, and police detained him.
The victim told police he was sitting in his car, smoking a cigarette, when McMillian walked up and asked for a ride. The victim said no, then McMillian threatened him with the club, grabbed the victim's cigarettes and wallet from the passenger seat.
McMillian took $12 in cash from the wallet, threw the wallet back in the car, then left.
