BEAUMONT, Texas — Beaumont Independent School District officials are laying out a plan to re-evaluate school attendance zones.
They say with growth and new construction happening all around the city they want to make sure students are going to school where they live.
The process will take nearly two years to complete and students be moving to a new school by fall of 2025.
With the possibility of district rezoning looming in the future, BISD brought in students, parents and teachers to talk about what's next.
"We have had major obstacles, weather events, school mergers and closures, but the overall premise of where our kids go to school has remained the same." Superintendent Dr. Shannon Allen told 12News.
Dr. Allen went on to say that the district started re-evaluating zones last summer and a 15 person Internal Rezoning Committee has been formed.
According to Dr. Allen, BISD wants to reduce travel for students and make sure that facilities are being used efficiently.
For families this could mean making some adjustments however, some parents are seemingly welcome to the potential changes, like Dewanna Batiste who hopes her daughter gets moved from Caldwood Elementary to Dishman Elementary.
"Caldwood is okay, I am just a native of Dishman and Amelia and I wanted her to follow in my footsteps," Batiste told 12News.
Dr. Allen promises that the community will be part of the process saying, "We're going to take in consideration the feedback from our parents, the feedback from our community, to make thoughtful decisions as we undergo this process."
This is the first major attendance rezoning in 30 years.
