Beaumont ISD makes plans for eventual demolition of former Central High School, Price Elementary campus

The board approved a contract with an engineering firm to begin steps to demolish the two vacant schools.

BEAUMONT, Texas — The Beaumont Independent School District is taking steps toward the demolition of the former Central High School and a former elementary campus that have not been used in several years.

The Beaumont school board voted unanimously during its Oct. 26, 2023 meeting, to approve a contract with an engineering firm to begin steps to demolish the two campuses, according to BISD spokesperson Jackie Simien.

The board approved "engineering services for demolition" with $42,000 going toward the former high school campus and $17,500 for the elementary campus.

The former Central High School campus was last called the Central Medical Magnet High School and is at 88 Jaguar Dr near Beaumont's Old Town neighborhood.

The campus takes up just over 20 acres including the stadium & track, tennis courts and baseball field.

The former Price Elementary campus is on the city's southside at 3350 Waverly St and covers about four acres southeast of the intersection 11th St and Washington Blvd.

So far the contract covers engineering work in preparation for demolition plans but not for the actual demolition itself.

The high school campus has been vacant since Tropical Storm Harvey hit Southeast Texas in 2017.

Price Elementary School was closed more than 10 years ago in 2012.
