Beaumont ISD to submit closing arguments in property tax values appeal against the state

This comes after the state didn't accept the district's property tax values, leading to a $6 million budget shortfall.

ORANGE COUNTY, Texas — The Beaumont Independent School District will submit closing arguments in appeal against the Texas Comptroller's office next week.

This comes after the state didn't accept the district's property tax values, leading to a $6 million budget shortfall.

In June 2023, school board members voted to approve a budget that doesn't include teacher raises.

The $171 million budget didn't include raises due to a disagreement between Jefferson County and the comptroller's office.

The district will now submit closing arguments in the appeal next week and a ruling is expected at the end of the month.

District officials believe its attorneys presented a very strong case in support of Beaumont ISD receiving local values.

If they lose their appeal, cuts could follow.

Beaumont ISD Superintendent Dr. Allen previously told 12News the district has had to appeal for property taxes once before a few years ago and they won. They are hoping to have that same fate again.
