Beaumont ISD approves name, colors and mascot chosen for merged high school

Central and Ozen students' top choice for the new high school name was Beaumont United High School.

Beaumont ISD announced the top choices for a new name, mascot, and colors for the merging high school.

With over 1,200 students voting, Beaumont United High School was the most popular name pick.

Maroon and gold colors, and Timberwolves were the top choices by students in ninth through eleventh grade.

The announcement of the colors was met with applause by students and parents at the Beaumont ISD board meeting.

“I feel like it’s going to be very overcrowded because they say it’s around 2,400 kids and we can only hold 1,800,” Gregory Johnson, an Ozen sophomore said.

“I liked the maroon and gold combination. And the Timberwolves I didn't really like it, I like Wildcats because it's closer to a Panther but it is what it is, it’ said and done,” Johnson said.

Kevin Nickson, a sophomore at Central also approved of the changes.

“We're just going to have to get behind this and move forward with it," Nickson said.

Along with the new school’s identity, Beaumont ISD administrators approved a new boundary map for the high schools. Areas west of Interstate 10 and Highway 69 are zoned for West Brook High School, and east of those roadways is zoned for Beaumont United.

Ron Jackson, a former principal at Central was announced as Beaumont United’s new principal.

The district says that rezoning will be considered after they get an accurate count of the number of students who are homeless after Tropical Storm Harvey.

No physical changes to the current Ozen campus were announced at the board of managers meeting.
