Beaumont City Council to consider ordinance that might lead to Gilbert Building demolition

BEAUMONT, Texas — At the next Beaumont City Council meeting, councilmembers will consider an ordinance that would declare the Gilbert Building in downtown as an 'imminent danger'.

This would give Tom Flanagan, the building's owner, five days to demolish it or the city will be authorized to do it without further notice.

The meeting's agenda states:

REGULAR AGENDA 9. Council consider an ordinance to declare 328-338 Bowie & 486-498 Pearl Street, also known as “The Gilbert Building,” as Imminent Danger and order the owner to raze the said structure within 5 days, staff is requesting City Council authorization to demolish said structure without further notification to the property owner or City Council action.

On June 6 2024, a fire tore through the building on Pearl Street, leaving it gutted.
