Beaumont City Council member gets into physical altercation after man allegedly threatens him

The man reportedly followed Getz and his girlfriend to their car where they exchanged words, before Getz hit him twice after allegedly being threatened.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A video of a Beaumont city councilman punching a man in the face is making it's rounds across Southeast Texas.

However, Councilmember Mike Getz says the only reason it came to that is because he felt the need to defend himself, and his loved one.

The incident happened shortly after Getz and his girlfriend finished a meal at The Grill on Calder.

In CCT video, the couple can be seen walking into the parking lot from the restaurant while being followed closely by another man.

After arriving at their car Getz and the man can be seen exchanging words, where the man allegedly threated Getz, leading to Getz delivering two punches into the mans face.

Getz told 12News that he felt the need to defend himself.

"At times you have to protect yourself and your loved ones, your property, and that is what I did. And that's what I would do again if faced with that situation," said Getz.

Councilman Getz says that he has already made a statement to Beaumont Police regarding the situation.
