Nederland neighborhood residents outraged over mail delay

"We haven't been getting our mail. We'll go days weeks without mail. Then we'll get a huge stack of mail," said McKinney.

NEDERLAND, Texas — Residents in the Hunter Ridge Neighborhood of Nederland say that they have not received their mail in a timely fashion in weeks.

Brandi McKinney lives in Hunter Ridge, a subdivision near Highland Park Elementary School, she says that many of her neighbors on fixed incomes are having to pay for a P.O. Box just to get their medication.

"We haven't been getting our mail. We'll go days weeks without mail. Then we'll get a huge stack of mail," said McKinney.

McKinney bought what she thought was her dream dream home in Hunter Ridge 2 months ago, but this mail delay has thrown a wrench in her idyllic vision.

"I had a system in place how I paid my bills, and how I function in life. But moving here I'm having to readjust all of that. Which is fine, but I need to get the mail in order to put my plan in place," said McKinney.

McKinney says that these delays have even caused her to fall behind on paying bills.

"We're paying late fees on bills, I'm trying to set reminders to pay bills. But I have to get the bills to pay the bill because we're at a new address," said McKinney.

McKinney isn't the only neighbor feeling the domino effect of mail arriving late.

"Medication would be late, I mean schools coming up so I know my kids been dying to get her school clothes and stuff and it's coming in late," said resident Brittany.

After weeks of no mail, neighbors went to the Nederland post office.

"I went in and asked them, and showed them that I had informed delivery that showed that I should be getting mail. I haven't received mail in 2 weeks, and they couldn't tell me. I asked them where it was and they said they went in the back and couldn't find it," said McKinney.

12News reached out to the USPS about the issues.

"Adjustments were recently made to some mail routes in order to accommodate the growth in the area," Evelina Ramirez USPS Corporate Communications Media Relations responded.

Ramirez also said that they are taking steps tp fix the problems in the neighborhood which includes ongoing hiring efforts.

McKinney told 12News that they have already checked for job postings.

"I was told there's not enough mail carriers, but when you look a friend looked the other day there wasn't even a listing for hiring anybody. So I mean, how are they trying to remedy the problem?" said McKinney.

12News also checked the job listings, while USPS is hiring across the state, no listings were found for Nederland.
