'Black cats get overlooked'| In honor of National Black Cat Day, here are a list of felines available at Beaumont Animal Care

"They definitely have a very social personality. I think that probably makes them the most interesting and fun to be around and they're usually very vocal."

BEAUMONT, Texas — A Beaumont animal shelter is celebrating National Black Cat Day by trying to find homes for three cats.

National Black Cat Day was established October 27, 2011 by Cats Protection organization to provide an opportunity for cat lovers and animal shelters to raise awareness about black cat adoption, advocate for their welfare, and find loving homes for black cats in need.

Beaumont Animal Care Adoption, Foster and Marketing Coordinator Viviana Lopez said their three black cats, Charcoal, Moonlite and her brother Danny, are ready to find their fur-ever homes.

Charcoal #53936 is a 4-5 month old adult female.

"She is currently in a foster home with her three siblings waiting for her forever home. She has been in foster care since September 19,2023," Lopez said.

Moonlite #54133 is an 8-10 week old female kitten.

"She was picked up by an Animal Control Officer on October 4, 2023, with her brother Danny," she said.

Danny #54135 is an 8-10 week old male kitten.

"He was picked up with his sister Moonlite," Lopez said.

Lopez says solid black and black or brown tabbies usually take the longest to get adopted.

"Well, a lot of times people tend to look for something that stands out to them. And unfortunately, that's what they would consider a black cat to be," she said.

Sometimes it can just depend on what other cats are available.

"A lot of times people come in looking for maybe a tuxedo or Calico. I think a lot of times the black cats get overlooked," Lopez said.

Lopez says black cats have a very social personality.

"I think that probably makes them the most interesting and fun to be around. They're usually very vocal," she said.

The month of October is associated with Halloween and all the things that go bump in the night and our minds conjure witches, monsters, bats and black cats.

This association makes it especially difficult for black cats and kittens to get adopted from animal shelters because their fur color is often associated with darkness and superstition.

Beaumont Animal Care is located at 1884 Pine Street and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
