NEDERLAND, Texas — Exciting new upgrades are in store for an organization that serves people with special needs.
Adaptive Sports for Kids is a non-profit that gives kids and adults with special needs an opportunity to play sports.
The organization has offered athletic opportunities to Southeast Texas families since 2011.
Soon they will be getting their own astro-turf field at the Babe Ruth Park in Nederland. The organization is really excited about having their own place to play.
The field will be more accessible to wheelchairs and people with special needs.
The Executive Director of Adaptive Sports for Kids, Allen Nation, says that the new field is basically it's a realization of a dream that the non-profit had since it started.
"The addition of this field, hopefully will bring awareness to our organization and things that we offer to families with special needs," said Nation.
Nation says they offer different sports all year free of charge.
"2022 was our biggest year yet, we had about 160 kids participate in Spring baseball,” said Nation.
The organization used their 12-year savings, along with a $120,000 grant from Valero to get this project done, according to Nation.
Nation says that the non-profit is planning their first game on the new field, March 25, 2023. They're expecting about 2000 people here at this stadium.
