Acadian Ambulance does not renew contract with City of Port Arthur

City Council members gathered Monday, for a special meeting to find out why Acadian dropped their service.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — A week after the City of Port Arthur approved a contract with a second ambulance service, Acadian Ambulance cuts ties with the city, for now.

City leaders brought in City Ambulance with the hope to address response times in the city.

City Council members gathered Monday, for a special meeting to find out why Acadian dropped their service.

The city does have a plan to move forward, by asking City Ambulance for more ambulances in order to tackle the high volume of calls, according to Port Arthur Fire Chief Greg Benson.

Acadian's decision to not sign the contract was sudden and unexpected, Benson told 12News.

"When they were scheduled to sign the contract they declined to sign the contract. That was their decision, but we identified it was till 5:00 that Friday," said Benson.

Acadian's reasoning comes from a specific city ordinance. Chapter 114 Article 2, which details the types of emergency medical personnel.

City leaders got an update on Monday.

"We will be going into executive session,"  said Port Arthur Mayor Thurman Bartie.

The council discussed the matter behind closed doors.

Eric Thibadeux, Acadian's Regional Director said they are just looking for a fair contract.

"There were some language issues from a legal perspective. We just want a contract that is fair and equitable for both EMS services," he said.

Without a signed contract Port Arthur has to move forward with one ambulance service, City Ambulance.

"They had 8 ambulances and they are bringing additional ones. But their focus is entirely on the City of Port Arthur, they will not be responding to other areas that are outside the city," Benson said.

At Monday's meeting, both parties were focused on finding solutions. The city is determined to have two ambulance companies serving city residents.

"Know that we will be having requests for proposals again, we hope that they do apply. And any other ambulance service we also hope they apply," said Port Arthur City Manager Ron Burton.

The city does hope to repair the 17 year relationship with Acadian.
