Elderly owner surrenders 2 dozen dogs to Beaumont Animal Care on Friday

When police officers made a "welfare check" they found two dozen dogs in the home so they called for assistance from Beaumont Animal Care.

BEAUMONT, Texas — An elderly dog owner surrendered 24 dogs to Beaumont Animal Care Friday after police were sent to a north Beaumont home.

Officers were sent to the home in the 2100 block of Grand Ave for a "welfare check" just after 8 a.m. Friday morning according to Matthew Fortenberry, of Beaumont Animal Care

When officers got to the they found two dozen dogs in the home so they called for assistance from Beaumont Animal Care, Fortenberry told 12News.

The dogs were well fed and healthy but were living in what Fortenberry described as bad living conditions with feces on the floor and other issues.

Beaumont Animal Care officers spoke to the man at the home, who admitted to them he had a problem and agreed to surrender the dogs.

No charges are being pursued and they are not treating this as an animal cruelty case because the dogs are healthy and the owner surrendered them, Fortenberry said.

While the dogs are currently in the custody of Beaumont Animal Care they are looking for help from a larger organization to take care of the dogs.

This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.
