BEAUMONT, Texas — 12News has won a regional Murrow Award for its coverage of the Jasper County wildfires in 2023.
The Radio Television Digital News Association announced winners for region six in the 2024 Edward R. Murrow Awards on Monday morning.
The 12News team won the breaking news category for its coverage of the 2023 wildfires in Jasper County.
During the summer of 2023, a dangerous drought developed over Southeast Texas.
Normally, the region is busy preparing for the threat of flooding from hurricanes, but 2023 was different.
Wildfires became a serious threat when, on the afternoon of August 24, 2023, a small fire spread rapidly, threatened homes and ravaged 3,000 acres.
12News won its first Murrow awards in 2020 when the station won for multimedia and newscast.
Regional winners automatically advance to the national competition, winners of which will be announced in August.
The Radio Television Digital News Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Murrow set as a standard for the profession of broadcast and digital journalism.
Murrow Awards are presented to news organizations, not individuals (except in the Student categories). All awards are presented based on the specific body of work submitted.
