Lamar adds two football coaches
BEAUMONT – Lamar University has filled out its football coaching staff with the additions of Carey Bailey and Kevin Barbay, announced head coach Ray Woodard on Wednesday.
Barbay, a former quarterback at Nederland High School, returns to the area to coach wide receivers for Lamar. Barbay played for Larry Neumann at Nederland before going on to play for Doug Williams at Grambling State University.
Barbay's first full-time coaching job came at Texas A&M-Commerce (2007-08) where he spent two seasons as the quarterbacks/wide receivers coach before moving on to North Texas as the tight ends coach for a season (2009). He most recently spent two seasons as the athletic director and head coach at Warren High School.
"I've know Kevin for a while now and it is great to have him join the Lamar coaching staff," said Woodard. "He has strong local roots and it's always nice to get a Lamar graduate on our staff. I look forward to working with him as we continue to build the program."
Barbay, who also earned a master's degree from Baylor in 2007, worked as a graduate assistant for the Bears from 2005-07. While a student at Lamar, Barbay also served as the wide receivers coach at Kelly High School for two seasons.
Bailey, who played collegiately at Tennessee, will coach the Cardinals' defensive line. The former head coach at Howard University (2007-10) brings nearly two decades of coaching experience on the college level to his new position at Lamar.
Prior to taking the top spot at Howard, Bailey spent two seasons as the defensive line coach at Minnesota. The Gophers played in a pair of bowl games while Howard was on staff. Bailey also served as defensive line coach at Oklahoma State (2004) and Middle Tennessee State (2003), helping the Cowboys to the 2004 Alamo Bowl.
"I'm excited to have Carey join the coaching staff," said Woodard. "He brings a lot of experience and knowledge coaching the defensive line and will be a great addition to our staff."
Bailey spent five seasons at Louisiana-Lafayette (1998-2002) coaching the defensive line, special teams and linebackers. His first full-time coaching job came at Virginia Military Institute where he was defensive line coach from 1995-98. Bailey also worked at West Virginia University as a graduate assistant.
While a player at Tennessee, Bailey helped the Volunteers to a pair of Southeastern Conference championships and four straight bowl appearances. As a junior, Bailey led Tennessee in sacks and tackles for loss.
