Accused Beaumont bomber pleads not guilty during arraignment

He pleaded pleaded “not guilty” to use of an explosive to damage property, possession of an unregistered destructive device and mailing a threatening communication.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A 40-year-old man pleaded not guilty in federal court today during his arraignment on three counts of charges linked to two explosive devices found in Beaumont last year.

Jonathan Torres pleaded “not guilty” to use of an explosive to damage property, possession of an unregistered destructive device and mailing a threatening communication.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 15.

A federal judge ruled that Torres is competent to stand trial in January. 

Federal agents and Beaumont Police officers arrested Torres after they say he set off a bomb at a Beaumont church and left a device at a Beaumont Starbucks in 2018.
