BEAUMONT, Texas — Lamar University has announced plans to host a virtual ceremony Friday, May 15, with additional recognition for seniors.
Wednesday officially marked the end of the semester for Lamar University students. While this chapter is the end for some, university officials hope the COVID-19 pandemic doesn't overshadow students' accomplishments.
"It almost doesn't feel like I'm graduating," senior Justice Peveto said.
Peveto was one of the students soaking up the final moments of his undergraduate career by taking senior pictures just 48 hours before the big day.
"Some of my friends I made throughout the years, may not be able to say goodbye to some of them in person, it kind of doesn't feel real, honestly," Peveto said.
Lamar recently announced they would make adjustments to graduation by hosting a virtual ceremony in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
Shelly Vitanza, a Lamar University spokesperson, says they plan on recognizing spring 2020 graduates by placing yard signs throughout campus.
"It's tragic; it really is. So, these students have really just preserved and are resilient, and that's going to serve them well in the long run," Vitanza said. "Put your red on or your cap and gown on, and come and take a picture next to your yard sign."
Students are getting creative, too. They're using social media to give Cardinals shout outs.
Junior Rida Ashrafi recently created a page called Humans of Lamar University to spotlight soon-to-be graduates along with university alumni.
"I like that I'm doing this 'cause it makes me feel good as well as I like hearing other people stories, like success stories. It motivates me to want to do better again," Ashrafi said.
While it wasn't ideal semester for Lamar they know better days are ahead.
