Curfew in place for unaccompanied children under 18 in Jefferson County

Judge Branick said some Southeast Texas superintendents voiced concerns about students gathering in parks and other locations with the school cancellations

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Texas — Children under the age of 18 will need a parent or guardian to be out and about in Jefferson County for the time being.

Many Southeast Texas schools are cancelling classes and adjusting schedules, leading to concerns about children congregating in parks and similar locations amid the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S.

Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick apologized for the Beaumont ISD students who began spring break on Monday. On Monday afternoon, Branick said he issued the 24-hour curfew order that will require anyone under the age of 18 to be accompanied by a parent when out in the community.

He told 12News this does not include teens who are going to work.

Coronavirus symptoms

The symptoms of coronavirus can be similar to the flu or a bad cold. Symptoms include a fever, cough and shortness of breath, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Most healthy people will have mild symptoms. A study of more than 72,000 patients by the Centers for Disease Control in China showed 80 percent of the cases there were mild.

But infections can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death, according to the World Health Organization. Older people with underlying health conditions are most at risk.

The CDC believes symptoms may appear anywhere from two to 14 days after being exposed.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • If you are 60 or over and have an underlying health condition such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes or respiratory illnesses like asthma or COPD, the World Health Organization advises you to try to avoid crowds or places where you might interact with people who are sick.
