An Eastman police officer was shot and killed Saturday at about 9:30 p.m.
Officer Tim Smith, 31, was responding to a suspicious person call near Main Street, according to GBI Special Agent in Charge Scott Whitley.
It was reported that a man with a gun was near some residences making people uncomfortable, according to the GBI.
Smith had a conversation with the alleged gunman while standing outside of his patrol vehicle. The man then shot Smith, according to the GBI.
He later died at an area hospital.
Agent Whitley says Smith called in his injuries and wasn't wearing a body camera. The GBI has brought in an extra 20 people from nearby agencies to work this case including Perry and Metter. They do not have a description of the shooter but they say they've worked several leads overnight.
According to Smith's Facebook page, he is a father of two children.
Anyone with any information on the shooting can call the GBI Eastman office at 478-374-6988.
