HOUSTON — A man fatally shot a woman after a fight before taking off with their 2-year-old child on a bicycle in the Independence Heights area Friday morning, according to the Houston Police Department. When police tried to confront the man, he turned the gun on himself.
This happened at a home near E 36th Street and North Main Street.
Police said the man and woman were in a relationship and had gotten into a fight before he shot her to death. He grabbed their 2-year-old child and took off on the bike.
When officers arrived at the home, they found the woman dead in a back room with multiple gunshot wounds. HPD said other officers in the area located the man and child along the North Freeway frontage road, but when they tried to approach him he pulled out a gun and shot himself.
HFD was immediately called to the scene and the man was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery. We don't yet know his condition.
The 2-year-old child is reportedly OK and was placed in the custody of a family member.
Homicide investigators were working to gather witness statements and process the scene.
If the man survives, HPD said he will likely face prosecution.
