West End Crossing residents still on edge after fatal shooting

"I did hear all the sirens and people screaming. My granddaughter was crying and hollering. I just covered her up, told her that God will protect her"

BEAUMONT, Texas — West End Crossing Apartment residents are still reeling after the deadly shooting that occurred there Saturday night.

"They arrived to 65-50 Phelan which is an apartment complex in reference to a shooting, when our officers arrived they located a deceased male inside an apartment," Beaumont Police Public Information Officer, Haley Morrow told 12News.

The Beaumont man that was killed was later identified as Aaron Robert, 23. According to police, he was inside the apartment of the ex-girlfriend of suspected shooter Troy Cheek, 25 who was caught because of the paper trail left behind by his ex.

"There was an ongoing issue with an ex-boyfriend of the tenant. Our officers were able to give real time information to the patrol officers who were responding. Our officers were able to intercept what ended up being the suspect on his way home," Morrow said.

This is not the first time that a violent crime has been reported at West End Crossing, and a woman who does not want to be named for safety reasons says she remembers hearing the chaos with her granddaughter that night.

"I did hear all the sirens people screaming and stuff like that. You know my granddaughter she was crying and hollering. I just covered her up and told her that God was going to protect her," the woman told 12News.

The suspect, Cheek, is currently in custody at Jefferson County Jail for that murder charge and has a bond amount of $75 thousand.

The management company over West End Apartment has commented on the incident in an email saying, "A tragic incident occurred in our community at approximately 10:45 PM last night. A guest of one of our residents was shot and killed when a person outside of the home fired a single gunshot through the window. A suspect has been apprehended. The man in custody had a prior relationship with our resident but was not, and never has been, a resident of West End Crossing Apartments. Our affected resident is safe and is with family. The management and owners of West End Crossing know that everyone in our community shares our concern for her well-being and for the family of the victim. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who have been affected by this tragedy. Anyone who may have additional information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Beaumont Police Department at 409-832-1234."

This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.
