Vidor Police investigating after Orange County constable threatens suicide, ex-wife accuses him of pulling gun on her child

The constable was threatening suicide with a gun at his Vidor home and was later transferred to a hospital for a mental health crisis.

VIDOR, Texas — Vidor Police are investigating after an Orange County constable was accused of pulling a gun and threatening to shoot a child following an incident at his home in Vidor.

Vidor Police Officers were sent to the home of Orange County Precinct Four Constable Matt Ortego after his ex-wife called police just after 1 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 26, 2023 according to an incident report from Vidor Police.

Ortego's ex-wife called police and told dispatchers that her daughter had called her crying and saying that Ortego had pulled a gun and threatened to shoot her daughter and other children who were at the home according to the report. She also told dispatchers Ortego was "extremely intoxicated" the report said.

A couple minutes later she told dispatchers she was at Ortego's home and "heard a loud bang."

Police arrived at Ortego's home within seven minutes according to the report.

Ortego was threatening suicide with a gun at his Vidor home, Vidor Police Chief Rod Carroll told 12News Thursday afternoon.

A little over an hour after officers arrived at the home they took Ortego to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont the report said.

Ortego was transferred to a hospital for a mental health crisis Carroll told 12News.

If police find, during their investigation, that any criminal violations happened then the case will be sent to the Orange County District Attorney's Office Carroll said.

Five Vidor officers and an Orange County Sheriff's deputy responded to the call the report said.

Ortego has not been charged at this time.

Police have not released any other information at this time.
