HOUSTON — A man in Iowa has been arrested in connection with the deadly shooting of his brother in Houston after spending two years on the run, according to the Houston Police Department.
Police said Kyle Andrew Coolack, 37, is charged with murder in the death of his brother Brad Henry Coolack, 35. The victim was killed in March 2022 at an apartment complex on West Greens Road near Willowbrook Mall.
Houston police detectives have traveled to Iowa to question Coolack and he's expected to be extradited back here soon.
According to the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department in Iowa, deputies were called on Sunday by a resident who said they'd kicked Coolack out of their home after he confessed to killing his brother.
A woman who said she had been dating the suspect said he was living with her brother.
“He’s so charismatic and, like, charming, and could tell you the right things you want to hear," Janey Voyeck told CNN.
Voyeck said she was shocked when Coolack admitted he was a wanted killer during an argument.
“He just kind of got mad and crazy and just bluntly told me that he has murdered his brother," Voyeck said.
Coolack was found walking along Highway 4 in Pomeroy, Iowa where he initially identified himself as a homeless man named "James." When he revealed his true identity, deputies discovered the arrest warrant out of Houston.
“I did believe it was only a matter of time before he was apprehended," HPD homicide detective Cullen Duncan said.
Brad Coolack killing
According to court documents, HPD officers went to the victim's apartment on March 11, 2022, after a man who identified himself as "Carlos" reported a shooting. The call came from the victim's phone and police believe Kyle Coolack was the caller.
Officers found Brad dead and his dog grazed by two bullets.
Witnesses told officers they heard an argument before one man yelled, quote: " You slept with my wife."
The victim's girlfriend told police that his brother, Kyle, often stayed with him.
Investigators later discovered that Kyle had an affair with his brother's wife while Brad was deployed overseas. In an earlier incident, Kyle had pistol-whipped Brad during an argument about the affair.
Police said Kyle Coolack was quickly identified as a person of interest. Following an in-depth investigation, homicide detectives charged him with murder on July 15, 2022, but they couldn't locate him.
Voyeck is grateful she found out the truth and the victim's family will have justice.
“I’m just happy to help them get the closure," she said.
Editor's note: An earlier version of the story said Brad had an affair with Kyle's wife.
