Man dead after police chase ends in shootout in Orange Tuesday morning

A barrage of more than 25 shots over about seven seconds can be heard in a video of the shooting.

ORANGE, Texas — A Tuesday morning police chase along Texas Highway 87 in Bridge City ended in Orange with a deadly shootout with police that left one man dead and a motor officer injured.

The chase ended near the intersection of 15th St. and Green Ave. near the West Orange-Stark Middle School campus.

The school was put on lockdown following the shooting.

One man died at the scene after being shot by officers following the chase, according to Detective Colton Havard, of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

A live video streamed to Facebook by a man from Orange captured the fatal shootout.

The video was shot through the man’s windshield as he slowly drove north on 15th St. approaching Green Ave.

Several police SUVs surround a pickup truck wrecked against a utility pole on the northeast corner of 15th St. at Green Ave. A school bus can be seen passing by before the shooting happens.

Several officers with their guns drawn can be seen in the video approaching a man on the ground about 20 feet from the wrecked pickup.

About 11 or 12 seconds into the video shots can be heard as police fire at the man.

It is not clear in the video what type of weapon, if any, the man was holding. He could be seen holding his head up looking toward the officers

The barrage of more than 25 shots takes about seven seconds.

One officer may have been injured after the shooting ended as he appeared to be limping and checking his right leg.

It is not yet clear how, where, or why the chase began.

As the chase progressed from Bridge City toward Orange, a heavy haul load was moving across the Cow Bayou Bridge on Highway 87. A Chambers County Precinct Six Constable's deputy was on his motorcycle helping to escort the heavy load, according to county public information officer, Samantha Humphrey.

When the chase passed by the deputy was struck, Humphrey confirmed to 12News.

His leg is broken but he is going to be ok Humphrey said.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers, Orange County Sheriff's deputies, Chambers County Constables Precinct Two and Three Constables and West Orange and Orange Police officers are on the scene.
