Port Neches man indicted for hit-and-run, accused of striking man taking out trash

He's accused of fleeing the scene after driving his truck through several front yards in Port Neches striking a man taking out the trash.

PORT NECHES, Texas — A 35-year-old Port Neches man has been indicted on charges related to an April 2024 hit-and-run that left a pedestrian with serious injuries.

Andrew Christopher Barnett, 35, of Port Neches, was indicted this week by a Jefferson County grand jury on a charge of "collision causing serious bodily injury" in connection to an incident on April 14, 2024. The charge is a third degree felony.

(EDITOR'S NOTE: The above video first aired in April 2024.)

Barnett is accused of fleeing the scene after driving his truck through several front yards just after 6 p.m. on a Sunday along the 2400 block of Earle St in Port Neches striking a Roger Sims, 26, man who was taking out trash, according to file stories.

Sims, who was taking out the trash for his fiancee's 80-year-old grandmother, was left with a broken jaw, spine injuries and fractures to the upper and lower parts of his left leg, according to file stories.

Witnesses told police that the truck had hit Sims and then left the scene.

Surveillance video from a nearby business caught the incident and showed Barnett's truck and license plate, according to police.

The video led officers to Barnett and they pulled him over driving the truck, according to file stories.

Police initially arrested him on traffic violations and impounded his truck after they gathered information that led them to believe he was driving the truck when it hit Sims.

Detectives questioned him and later released him.

He admitted to them that he had been driving, according to a probable cause affidavit in the case.

After collecting more evidence in the case detectives filed the case with the district attorney and got an arrest warrant for Barnett.

He was arrested at his job shortly thereafter.

This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.
