Texas Rangers investigating death of suspect after Port Arthur Police officers 'engaged' him

While in custody, the man showed signs of medical distress. He was taken to the Medical Center of Southeast Texas, where he later died around 5:45 a.m.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A man is dead following an interaction with Port Arthur Police officers Thursday morning.

Officers were called to the 800 block of San Jacinto Avenue at around 4:49 a.m. in reference to a family disturbance, according to a news release from the Port Arthur Police Department.

When they arrived, they were confronted by a 28-year-old man. During the encounter, a struggle developed and officers later took the man into custody.

While in custody, the man showed signs of medical distress, according to the release.

He was taken to the Medical Center of Southeast Texas, where he later died around 5:45 a.m.

The man was pronounced deceased by Jefferson County Precinct Two Justice of the Peace Joseph Guillory II after 7 a.m.

An autopsy has been ordered. 

No shots were fired by officers, Port Arthur Police Chief Tim Duriso told 12News.

Multiple evidence markers were clearly visible in the street where the incident happened.

The identity of the man is not being release as requested by the Texas Rangers, who are leading the investigation.

The District Attorney's Office was notified, per the Port Arthur Police chief's policy.

The officers were placed on administrative leave while the investigation is in progress.
