Port Arthur police officer arrested, charged with DWI early Saturday morning

The officer has been with the department for five years, Port Arthur Police Chief said.

SOUR LAKE, Texas — A Port Arthur Police Officer was arrested and charged with suspicion of driving under the influence early Saturday morning. 

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office arrested Clevon Demitrus Buxton, 35, around 4 a.m. June 29 on Old Sour Lake Road in Beaumont after deputies found him asleep in a car stopped in the middle of the road, Port Arthur Police said in a news release. 

Port Arthur Police Chief Tim Duriso said the officer has been placed on leave until they receive a file of disposition. 

The officer is a veteran of the department for over five years, Duriso said. 

Another officer, Joshua Abshire, was arrested and charged with DWI in Orange County on June 1.

Port Arthur Police said they are conducting an internal affairs investigation about both of these incidents and will make a further determination about when the investigations are complete.

On June 29, 2019, shortly after 5:00 am, a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy arrested a suspected intoxicated driver after he was found asleep in a vehicle.

This arrest occurred on Old Sour Lake Road, Beaumont, Jefferson County, Texas, as a result of Deputies response to a call of a vehicle stopped in the roadway. The individual in control of the vehicle was arrested at the scene and transported to the Jefferson County Jail. The individual has been identified as a Port Arthur Police Officer.

The Port Arthur Police Department has initiated an Internal Affairs investigation and will make a determination with regard to the disposition of any personnel matter at the appropriate time. This is standard procedure for personnel actions of this nature.
