Newton County man shoots acquaintance accused of breaking into home, taking phone, money

The homeowner told deputies that he shot the intruder who ran away from the scene.

NEWTON COUNTY, Texas — A Newton County man was shot after he broke into the home of a person he was acquainted with and stole a cell phone and money.

On Wednesday, just before 3:30 a.m., Newton County deputies went to the 900 block of County Road 4089 in the Sandjack area after receiving a report about a shooting. 

When deputies got there, they spoke with the homeowner who said a person he's acquainted with broke into his home and took his cell phone and $60. 

The homeowner told deputies that he shot the intruder who ran away from the scene. The suspect dropped the homeowner's property outside the house, according to a news release from Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby.

Deputies went to the possible suspect's home located on County Road 4094 and spoke with him.

The man had a gunshot wound to the leg and required medical attention. 

Police called Allegiance EMS and the suspect was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital. His condition is unknown. 

The circumstances of the incident are under investigation by the NCSO.
