NEDERLAND, Texas — If you receive a call from someone claiming to be the Nederland Police chief requesting personal information, do not be alarmed, it's a scam.
The Nederland Police received a report that a citizen received a call from "the police chief" requesting to check their immigration status. The victim gave sensitive information to the scammer.
"No officer or federal agent will ask for personal information or credit card information," said Nederland Police Chief Gary Porter. "Sometimes, they will spoof the police department's phone number so that the caller ID show's the agency's name."
Nederland Police wants people to be aware of any potential scammers and to not give any personal information over the phone if you receive such call.
"Contact the police department and ask to speak with an officer," said Chief Porter.
The agency's telecommunications officer can also help citizens identify any potential scam callers, however, an officer can be dispatched if requested.
- Do not give any personal information over the phone to the scammer or anyone
- Do not call the number back that the scammer provides
- Disconnect, contact the police department to see if the person is legit
- Contact the Nederland Police Department at 409-723-1516 to make a report
This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.
