Mother of three worries about neighborhood safety after dice game erupts into fatal gunfire

"Bullets don't have a name on it so we could've just been pulling up on the driveway or taking out the trash and we could of gotten hit or something."

BEAUMONT — Neighbors expressed concern for the safety of their families Friday after a dice game turned deadly Thursday night.

Dana Handy, a working mother of three, lives in what she describes as a generally "quiet neighborhood" but after last night she's rethinking the safety of her neighborhood.

"It kind of touched because it was so close to home. Bullets don't have a name on it so we could've just been pulling up on the driveway or taking out the trash and we could of gotten hit or something," says Handy.

Handy's daughter was the first to hear the gun shots that killed Gregory Willridge, 52, of Beaumont, Thursday night at about 9 p.m.

Handy says when they went outside to check things out police had blocked off the roads and told them a person was dead.

Police say Willridge was shooting dice when an argument escalated and shots rang out.

He was pronounced dead at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital's emergency room shortly after he was brought there by private vehicle along with two other men.

A 34-year-old man was shot multiple times and is in stable condition and a 28-year-old man suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Handy say's she never expected something like that to go down so close to her home.

"It definitely sparks concerns, hopefully Beaumont Police can get it down and under control," she says.

She says life is too short to throw it away over a dice game.

Investigators are asking that anyone with information about the shooting come forward.
