Deputies shoot driver who slammed into patrol car during traffic stop, MCSO says

Captain Tim Holifield with MCSO said the incident started when the driver did not immediately stop for deputies attempting a traffic stop.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas — The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is investigating after deputies shot and killed a man who backed his vehicle into a patrol car during a traffic stop early Sunday morning.

This happened on the I-45 feeder road near Pruitt Road around 3 a.m.

Captain Tim Holifield said the incident started when the driver, now identified as Inyerman Jose Munoz, 39, of Humble, did not immediately stop for deputies attempting a traffic stop. Eventually, they came upon an unrelated crash and the driver pulled over. As the deputy was getting out of his patrol car, Holifield said Munoz threw his car into reverse and slammed into the deputy's vehicle.

The deputy was standing in the door and was knocked to the ground. That's when Holifield said deputies opened fire, hitting Munoz.

Munoz was treated at the scene before being taken to a hospital where he died, according to MCSO. The deputy was also taken to a hospital for treatment and released. Another deputy at the scene was uninjured.

Sheriff Rand Henderson said there have been too many officer-involved shootings recently.

"Thankfully, you know, God has blessed us to allow our deputies to go home and, you know, sleep with their families tonight," Henderson said. "We're prayerful that, you know, that they make a full recovery."

One of the deputies involved has two and a half years of law enforcement experience and the other has less than a year, according to MCSO.

The shooting is under investigation by MCSO, the Texas Rangers and the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office.
