PORT ARTHUR, Texas — A 17-year-old Memorial High School student has been indicted following an on-campus incident after police say he assaulted an officer.
Ja'Kelvin Trahan, 17, of Port Arthur, was arrested on the campus after fighting with several Port Arthur Police officers on Friday morning, Jan. 5, 2024, according to a probable cause affidavit in the case.
A Jefferson County grand jury indicted him this week on a charge of assaulting a peace officer.
Police say one of the officers was briefly knocked unconscious after being punched by Trahan.
A pair of officers were initially called to a classroom at Memorial High School where Trahan was on the floor and “seemed intoxicated,” according to the affidavit.
It is unclear what substance Trahan may have been under the influence of.
As the two officers spoke to the teacher, police say Trahan flipped them off, walked out of the classroom and headed for an exit door.
The officers chased after Trahan and described him as incoherent as they tried to keep him from leaving.
At this point Trahan punched one of the officers with a closed fist causing the officer to fall, knocking him out for a few seconds and leaving his head bleeding, the affidavit said.
Trahan then ran outside where one of the officers shocked him with a Taser. This did not stop Trahan, who ripped out the Taser prongs and ran onto a school bus, the affidavit said.
Police say Trahan tried to start the engine of the bus but was not able to.
He then ran off the bus and continued to fight with the officers, one of whom shocked him with a Taser again according to the affidavit.
A third officer arrived and helped subdue and handcuff Trahan.
Medics responded to the school to check out the injured officer as well as Trahan after he’d been shocked with the Taser.
When medics worked on him, his eyes were blood-shot, he was foaming at the mouth and speaking incoherently and “seemed to be under the influence of an unknown substance(s)” according to the affidavit.
Trahan was taken to the Medical Center of Southeast Texas for evaluation where he also became aggressive and had to be restrained, the affidavit said.
Once he was cleared at the hospital, he was taken to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility where he was booked.
