BEAUMONT, Texas — A man who previously pleaded guilty to indecency with a child appeared today in the 252nd District Court for his sentence.
Judge Raquel West is presiding.
Gustavo Vazquez was facing up to 20 years in prison for the felony charge, but he entered a plea agreement with the prosecution that left the sentencing up to the judge with a maximum sentence of five years.
Vazquez' attorney asked Judge West to consider his client's limited criminal history and health conditions.
Judge West said a five-year cap could have him out fairly quickly without anything done to stop him from being a threat again.
She then sentenced him to 10 years' probation, ordered that he pay a $10,000 fine and complete a rehab program. She also ordered him to register as a sex offender.
Judge West said if he violates his probation, he could be sent to prison for up to 20 years.
