PORT NECHES, Texas — A man was taken into custody by Port Neches Police after he brought a gun to the Mid-County Madness pep rally on Friday.

James Curtis Baker had the gun holstered when he arrived to the Port Neches Groves High School gym just before 2 p.m. according to Port Neches Police Chief Cherí Griffith.

Baker was arrested at the gym then interviewed at the police station. He was brought to the Jefferson County Jail.

It did not appear that Baker intended to do any harm, but even with constitutional carry, it is illegal to carry a gun onto a high school campus according to Chief Griffith.

He is being charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place.
