BEAUMONT, Texas — A Kountze man was found guilty and sentenced to prison Wednesday following his trial this week for aggravated sexual assault of a child.
Corey Allen Carter, 28, of Kountze, was found guilty on Wednesday by a Hardin County jury on a single charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
He was then sentenced by the jury to 20 years in a Texas prison.
Carter had faced from five years to life in prison on the charge.
His trial began earlier this week in Hardin County's 356th District Court.
A jury was picked on Monday, November 6, 2023 and testimony began Tuesday before Judge Steven Thomas.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Kaneshia Moore.
Carter's defense is being handled by William Wilkerson.
Deputies and Child Protective Services conducted an investigation in 2022 and turned the case over to the District Attorney's office and the DA did further investigation, according to Hardin County Sheriff Mark Davis.
The District Attorney's Office then presented the case to a grand jury which indicted Carter on the charges.
Aggravated sexual assault of a child is a first-degree felony. The punishment can carry a minimum sentence of five years and up to life in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
If convicted, Carter will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
