Jury selection begins in trial of Beaumont man accused of child sex crimes

BEAUMONT, Texas — Jury selection has began in the trial of Gustavo Gonzalez Chavez, 71, of Beaumont, who is accused of continuous sexual abuse of a child.

Chavez was indicted in January of 2022. The abuse allegedly started when victim was 8-years-old, according to the probable cause affidavit.

The abuse is alleged to have happened over a two year period. Chavez performed a sex act with the victim multiple times, according to the affidavit.

The victim made an outcry to the police.

The defense attorney in the trial is Ryan Gertz. Tatiana Zelezniak is prosecuting.
