Safety Alert: How to protect yourself from falling victim to a theft

Thousands will be out shopping, and officials say you should follow a few steps to protect yourself

BEAUMONT, Texas — Southeast Texas is days away from one of the busiest shopping days of the year, Black Friday.

Thousands will be out shopping and trying to get their hands on those last minute deals. Officials say what you need to worry about more than saving money is your safety.

Captain Crystal Holmes with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said there are a few things you need to look out for when shopping or running errands.

Captain Holmes said many robberies happen in parking lots.

She said to take your eyes off your cell phone and focus more on your surroundings.

Also, know where you parked your car.

You should be cautious about carrying large bags and purses, because they could make you a target. Officials say you'll probably want to leave those at home.

"Wear something with multiple pockets that you can put what you need in there while you are shopping," said Holmes.

"They told us to hit the ground…we hit the ground. We gave them everything. The guy came up on me and put a gun against my head," said Kelm.

The thieves were after the couples phone and their wallets.

"I thought I was about to get killed. I really thought they were going to kill me," said Kelm.

The couple did not fight back which Captain Holmes said is the right thing to do.

"If someone comes upon you and they want your items give it to them. Do not fight. Nothing in your purse, in your wallet or in your shopping bag is worth more than your health or your life," said Captain Holmes.
