NEWTON COUNTY, Texas — The Newton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a homicide after a 16-year-old boy was shot at Elam's Event Center early Sunday morning.
Just before 4 a.m., the Newton County Sheriff's Office emergency dispatch center received a call about a teen who was shot at Elam's Event Center at U.S. Highway 190 East, according to a news release from Sheriff Robert Burby.
Deputies arrived just a few minutes later, and the 16-year-old boy was treated at the scene by Allegiance emergency medical services medics. He was taken to Jasper Memorial Hospital.
The teen was pronounced dead just before 5 a.m. His name has not been released.
The 16-year-old was confirmed to be a Burkeville ISD student Monday afternoon by the district's superintendent, Gordon Thomas.
"It's an unfortunate tragic event. We ask that people keep this family in their thoughts and prayers," said Thomas.
A homicide investigation is still underway, and no suspects are in custody at this time.
Investigators are working at the crime scene, gathering information and talking to witnesses, according to Sheriff Burby.
