Beaumont officers no-billed by grand jury in fatal July shooting of man outside Old Town home

The officer-involved shooting happened on July 15, 2024, after officers encountered an armed Beaumont man outside his Old Town home.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A Jefferson County grand jury has no-billed the Beaumont Police officers who fatally shot a 68-year-old man outside his home in July.

The officer-involved shooting happened on Monday, July 15, 2024, in Beaumont's Old Town neighborhood after officers encountered an armed Beaumont man outside his home when they responded to a call about a suicidal person.

Grand jurors, last week, declined to indict the officers in the shooting death of Charles Carrol, 68, of Beaumont, according to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office.

The officers were sent to a home in the 2300 block of Ashley in reference to a welfare check involving a possible suicidal person at around noon, police previously told 12News.

When officers arrived they found Carrol in the street holding a gun and not long after that officers fatally shot him.

Police have not said exactly what led to officers opening fire.

Carrol was later pronounced dead by Beaumont EMS medics.

A neighbor told 12News they heard at least six shots, according to a file story.
