BEAUMONT, Texas — A former Lumberton Independent School District employee is facing a felony obstruction charge over an alleged threat made to a co-worker over reporting child abuse.

Mary Agnew Johnson, 59, of Lumberton, was indicted in October 2023 on a third degree felony charge of obstruction or retaliation according to the indictment.

Johnson is currently free on a $10,000 bond and if convicted, faces from two to 10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

Johnson is accused of threatening a co-worker in order to prevent them from "reporting or testifying to suspected abuse of a specific minor" who is a relative of Johnson's.

She is the former public information officer for the district.

Johnson's co-worker, an educator, is by Texas law obligated to report all suspected child abuse.

This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.
