Former Beaumont ISD electrician Calvin Walker has only paid $150 of his $1.17M restitution for defrauding school district

Calvin Gary Walker, who was found guilty of felony fraud in September 2019, was ordered to serve 180 days in jail on weekends.

BEAUMONT, Texas — The former Beaumont Independent School District electrical contractor who defrauded the district of $1.2 million more than a dozen years ago has only paid $150 of his $1.17 million restitution.

Calvin Gary Walker, who was found guilty of felony fraud in September 2019, was ordered to serve 180 days in jail on weekends, as ordered by Jefferson County Judge John Stevens.

The court held a hearing in October where it was determined that Walker has paid around $150 dollars of the $1.17 million he owes in restitution. This adds up to around $10 a month, according to Assistant District Attorney Pat Knauth.

Knauth tells 12News they will look at what Walker is doing to make a good faith effort to pay restitution.

To revoke someone's probation, you have to show that they have the ability to pay it but haven't. Walker doesn't have to pay all of it, he just has to make a good faith effort to pay what he can, according to Knauth.

If he doesn't then Walker is subject to revocation.

Walker also hasn't served his ordered jail time, according to Jefferson County Probation Department.

In March, the U.S. Supreme Court turned down a request to hear Walker's appeal.

A petition for a writ of certiorari filed in November 2022 by Walker was denied on February 21, 2023.

The writ is a request that the Supreme Court order a lower court to send up the record of the case for review according to USCourts.gov.

Walker's attorney, Dick Deguerin, had argued in November 2022 that Walker should not begin his sentence until his case could be reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Judge Stevens disagreed at the time and ordered that he start serving his sentence immediately.

Walker was sentenced to 10 years on probation which includes the 180 days in jail.

Stevens is allowing Walker to serve his 180 days on the weekends.

It will take 90 weekends for Walker to serve his 180 days, Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stevens previously told 12News.

He began serving them on the weekend of Friday, November 11, 2022.
