PORT ARTHUR, Texas — A Port Arthur man has been indicted for aggravated assault after pointing a gun at a man who then used a crossbow to protect himself and others in his apartment, including an infant.

The suspect blindly fired shots into the apartment unit after being shot with the crossbow.

On June 17, 2024 just before noon, Port Arthur officers responded to the 900 block of Main Avenue after receiving reports that multiple shots were fired at the apartment.

Officers spoke with resident Demarcus Scott, who told police that a man was hanging around his apartment making threats to shoot him.

Scott told police that the suspect, Davonte Reynolds, 21, of Port Arthur, began displaying a handgun with an extended magazine as he was making the threats.

Police say that Scott told them that since he is a felon and cannot possess a firearm, he armed himself with a crossbow.

The resident said that he opened his front door and saw the suspect coming up the stairs pointing the handgun at him.

Scott fired the crossbow and struck Reynolds in the upper chest, that's when Reynolds began shooting at the apartment.

Officers say Reynolds broke out the window of Scott's apartment and stuck the handgun in the window and began blindly firing shots into the bedroom of the apartment.

Scott was inside the bedroom along with a 32-year-old woman and a one-week-old infant.

Reynolds left the scene in a vehicle.

Officers went to apartments located in the 5300 block of Gulfway Dr. where they located Reynolds with a crossbow bolt in his upper chest.

Reynolds admitted to police that he was at the apartments located at 901 Main Ave., but denied possessing a handgun.

He was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital to be treated for his injuries.

When investigators got to the scene, they saw multiple shell casings outside the bedroom window, as well as powder burns to the blinds indicating that the handgun was fired right at the window, according to the probable cause affidavit.

There were also several bullet holes in the bedroom walls and living room.

Investigators also spoke with a witness in the apartment complex that validated the statement Scott gave to officers.

With the evidence on scene and statements of the witnesses, there was probable cause to believe that Reynolds did use a deadly weapon in the commission of an assault against three individuals, according to a release from PAPD.

All victims told investigators that they wanted to file charges for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Reynolds was arrested and transported to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility for booking.

Reynolds was indicted on three counts of aggravated assault.
