Driver arrested after trying to grab evidence from Newton deputy after drug paraphernalia found during traffic stop

Deputies are still investigating and more charges could be filed against him.

NEWTON, Texas — A driver in Newton County is behind bars after getting caught with drug paraphernalia and then trying to snatch it back from a deputy.

When Newton deputies pulled over a car driven by Eric Edward Brown, 38, of Buna , on Friday, Oct. 27, 2023, for an "equipment violation" a police dog, "K9 Bruce," alerted on the vehicle according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

Deputies then searched the vehicle and found drug paraphernalia but Brown tried to grab it from a deputies hands and then grabbed the deputy's legs causing both of them to fall to the ground the release said.

A struggle then ensued before the two deputies were able to handcuff Brown.

One deputy was injured in the struggle, so he and the suspect were taken to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont to be checked out.

Once Brown was cleared by doctors he was taken back to Newton County where he was booked into the Newton County Jail.

Brown is facing a charge of possession of a gram or less of a controlled substance in penalty group 1 as well as a charge of resisting arrest, search or transport. He is being held on bonds totaling $15,000 for both charges.

Deputies are still investigating and more charges could be filed against Brown according to the news release.
