Two Beaumont residents arrested after leading police on car chase in stolen vehicle

On January 12, 2024, a Beaumont Police Department officer was driving on East Lucas Drive when he received an alert about a stolen Charger on the same road.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Beaumont Police arrested two people after a chase in Beaumont Friday afternoon.

On January 12, 2024 around 12:04 p.m., a Beaumont Police Department patrol officer was driving east on East Lucas Drive when he received an alert about a stolen black Dodge Charger that was traveling west on the same road, according to a BPD news release.

When the officer tried to do a traffic stop, the driver of the Charger. identified as 22-year-old Beaumont resident Jamykel Phillips, continued driving to evade the officer. Phillips eventually ended up in the Best Buy parking lot, the release states.

While in the parking lot, the passenger,  21-year-old Beaumont resident Dezmond Spencer, got out of the vehicle and began to run away on foot, but was quickly caught by police.

Phillips continued driving and hit two vehicles in the parking lot before stopping on the access road near IHOP, according to the release.

He then got out of the vehicle and ran on foot across the freeway and was arrested near Target. 

During the investigation, officers learned that the vehicle was stolen in a carjacking Thursday in Humble, according to the release.

BPD’s auto theft and persons crimes detectives worked with the Humble Police Department to interview the suspects of the car jacking before they were transported to the Jefferson County Jail.

Phillips is being charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading in a motor vehicle and evading on foot.

Spencer is being charged with evading on foot.

On Friday, January 12, 2024 at 12:04 p.m, a BPD Patrol Officer was traveling east bound on E. Lucas when he received an alert on a stolen black Dodge Charger that was traveling west bound on E. Lucas. When the Officer initiated a traffic stop, the driver began to evade in the vehicle, eventually ending up in the Best Buy parking lot. While in the parking lot, the passenger exited the vehicle and began to evade on foot but was quickly apprehended. The driver continued to evade in the vehicle, striking two vehicles in the parking lot before coming to a stop on the access road near IHOP. The driver then exited the vehicle and fled on foot across the freeway where he was apprehended near Target.  During the investigation, Officers learned that the vehicle was stolen in a carjacking yesterday in Humble. BPD’s Auto Theft and Persons Crimes Detectives worked with Humble PD and interviewed the suspects in reference to the car jacking before they were transported to the Jefferson County Jail. The suspects were identified as: Jamykel Phillips, a 22 year old Beaumont resident- charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Evading in a Motor Vehicle and Evading on Foot. Dezmond Spencer, a 21 year old Beaumont resident- charged with Evading on Foot.
