BEAUMONT, Texas — An arrest has been made in Beaumont in connection with the 2020 murder of a 78-year-old woman in Bridge City.
Joel C. Sonnier was booked into the Jefferson County Correctional Facility on a murder charge Thursday night at 7:50 p.m. after being arrested by Beaumont Police Officers.

He's charged with the murder of Janette Carney, 78, of Bridge City, who was found dead in her apartment on June 10, 2020.
Sonnier was arrested at a home in Beaumont on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, by Beaumont officers, according to a news release by Bridge City Police.
A warrant on the murder charge was issued on Thursday, according to Bridge City Police.
His was bond set at $1 million on Friday morning by Jefferson County Magistrate Judge Marc DeRouen. Sonnier will have to wear an ankle monitor and remain in Jefferson or Orange County.
Sonnier was indicted by an Orange County grand jury on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.
Bridge City Police officers were sent to Carney's apartment at the Citrus Cove apartment complex, at 140 Charles Ave, just before 9 p.m. on a Wednesday night.
A family member had asked police to make a welfare check on Carney, but when they got there they found her body.
