BEAUMONT, Texas — A 21-year-old Beaumont man has pleaded guilty to federal charges in connection with a string of armed robberies of Beaumont businesses in 2023.
Brandon Tyrone Mayberry, 21, of Beaumont, pleaded guilty on Thursday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Christine L. Stetson to charges of a Hobbs Act robbery and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.
He faces up to 20 years in federal prison on the robbery charge and another seven years for brandishing a gun during the robberies according to the release. He was indicted in November 2023 on the federal charges.
Mayberry was originally indicted on state charges by a Jefferson County grand jury in June 2023 in connection with the armed robbery of the Game X Change on Dowlen Rd. At the time, police also suspected he and an accomplice were involved in several other armed robberies that happened in April and May of 2023.
The robberies were eligible for the federal Hobbs Act charge because the businesses sold items that were brought in over state lines according to spokesperson at the Department of Justice.
Daniel James Leatherwood, 21, his accomplice, faced the same charges and pleaded guilty to them on January 25, 2024.
